Ghana Ashanti Brass Casting - ethical, responsible, community based tours
There is only one brass casting village in Ghana, Krofrom near Kumasi. The craftsmen and women use lost wax casting - the same method used to create the 13th century cast brass heads of Ife in Nigeria, and the famous 16th century Benin bronzes, now in the British Museum.
The originals are beautifully sculpted out of soft beeswax. Then they are dipped into a mix of very fine charcoal and water to give a coating which holds all the fine details. This is then covered in a mould of coarse palm fibres and clay.
The mould is heated and the wax is poured out. Scrap brass is then melted in a crucible and poured into the mould.
At the peak of the Ashanti kingdom, the technique was used for casting gold. Traditional objects include gold weights in a variety of animal shapes, and highly ornamented lidded vessels as funerary urns. Human figures representing palm wine tappers, drummers, and chiefs are also common.
Dates are Saturday to Saturday: Feb 7-21, Mar 7-21, Apr 11-25, May 9-23, Jun 13-27, Jul 11-25, Aug 8-22, Sept 12-26, Oct 10-24, Nov 14-28, Dec 12-26. Seven, ten day tours start first Saturday.
